Real reported-crime numbers for Downtown, Vancouver BC — from official Vancouver Police Department open data.
Is Downtown Vancouver safe? It's the question every renter, buyer, and newcomer asks before signing a lease — and the Vancouver Police Department's own open data gives a blunt answer. Between September 2025 and August 2026, the VPD recorded 10,577 incidents in the Downtown local area (which includes Stanley Park). That is more than any other neighbourhood in the city, nearly four times the next-highest area, and roughly a quarter of all incidents recorded across Vancouver's local areas.
Almost half of Downtown's reported crime is theft: 4,864 reports of other theft, 1,911 thefts from vehicles, and 321 commercial break-ins. Mischief added another 1,961 reports. Violent crime is real but a much smaller share of the total: 985 violent incidents, including 982 offences against a person and 3 homicides. Put simply, about nine out of ten reported incidents in Downtown are property crime, not violence.
What does that mean if you're moving here? Downtown is dense, busy, and full of opportunity for opportunistic theft — parked cars, bike racks, and ground-floor storefronts see the most of it. The block-by-block picture varies a lot, though: incident clusters are highly localized.
